The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe
is the spiritual symbol of its people, and the church building is the oldest in Puerto Vallarta. It was the priest from San Sebastián who first received authorization from the Archbishop of Tepic to bless the grounds and lay the first foundation stone on April 19, 1895, and in 1916 the first church was built in clay. The devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe dates back to the early years of the first settlement by the banks of the River Cuale on December 12, 1851. it all began because of a small religious picture Mrs.Margarita Sanchez Torres brought with her on her journey to the coast. She was the mother of the founder of Puerto Vallarta, Guadalupe Sanchez Torres. Thecsettlement was called Las Peñas (The Boulders), and ground of worship was established in appreciation of the blessing bestowed on them. The first 12 days of December, the town celebrates its festivities with long processions carrying offerings to the Virgin of Guadalupe, patron saint of Mexico.

Iglesia San Miguel Arcángel
This parish is very popular for the celebration of its two religious fiestas. It is the only church in Vallarta that officially celebrates two festivities: Jesus Resurrected to honor the foundation of the church on March 23, 1992 and Saint Michael the Archangel, the parish’s patron saint, from September 21 – 29.

Iglesia de San Rafael
This parish is located in the center of Colonia Lázaro Cárdenas. People congregate to celebrate the day of Saint Raphael on October 24 and to enjoy their community gathering with an authentic Mexican fiesta. Each first of the month the parish celebrates the mass of Divine Providence with Mariachi.

Iglesia del Refugio
It was in 1964 when the grounds for this parish were established. Voluntary donations were petitioned and from being a chapel it constituted itself as parish in 1975. This was the reason why the pantheon, which was previously located at Parque Hidalgo, on part of the DIF grounds and what are today the churches’ grounds, had to be relocated, as there was no room for people to congregate. Our lady of the Shelter is celebrated on July 4.

Iglesia de Santa Cruz:
The Church of The Holy Cross was founded by the parish priest of the church of Guadalupe in 1975 to attend the needs of those who lived on the other side of the river in Colonia Emiliano, the first district of Puerto Vallarta. After 27 years, this church is still the place of worship on the other side of the River Cuale. The Parish’s religious festivity is celebrated on May 3, Day of The Holy Cross.
